Classrooms
Through activities in daily living: a
child’s fine motor skills, care of the environment, care of self, as well as
grace and courtesy are developed. Once in our primary classrooms, the sensorial
materials develop the skills of observation in every sense, develop rich
vocabulary, as well as an appreciation of the materials used. Language is
developed through many materials in the classroom. Stories, songs, poems, the
names used in geography and science, and the tactile sandpaper letters all
contribute to a multi-faceted approach to learning.
Math concepts are initiated with
concrete materials including sorting, counting and problem solving. Eventually,
children move on to use the many math materials. Maria Montessori designed all
of her materials to initially isolate a concept before unifying ideas.
Our
classrooms focus on every child learning at his or her own pace. We offer two
primary classrooms with up to 20 children directed by two Montessori trained
teachers. Children must be 2.9 by September 1st to be considered for the primary
class and 5 by September 1st for the Kindergarten program. Most children are
enrolled for a 2 or 3 year cycle believing that a child develops optimally when
they are allowed to flourish, over time, in a familiar and safe environment. The
atmosphere in our school is beautiful and calm. The environment is quiet and
orderly with teachers using positive reinforcement to build success. It is
important that the child feel a sense of continuity between home and school, so
we hope that our environment resonates with you as parents.
